The opening has all the makings of a standard boy-meets-girl, boy-and-girl-can't-stand-each-other, boy-and-girl-need-each-other romantic comedy and while this path is taken to a large degree, the movie opts for fewer laughs and more warmth and sentimentality. In short, neither is impressed by the other. He's an hour late, forgot to make the dinner reservations, and expects her to hop on his motorcycle. The film opens with her meeting Eric Messer (Josh Duhamel) for a blind date their mutual friends have arranged. Heigl plays Holly Berenson, a single Atlanta woman with a successful little bakery and catering business. Life as We Know It harks back to that hit 2007 comedy because it again tosses Heigl into a parenthood situation she is unprepared for with someone she's not all that crazy about. That has made her one of Hollywood's top-earning actresses with just a few leading film roles under her belt, most notably Knocked Up. Katherine Heigl has stated that her decision to leave "Grey's Anatomy" was to focus on her family, but bowing out of ABC's popular hospital drama in 2009 freed her up to make two movies released in 2010, each of which reportedly paid her $12 million. Last but not least, Ben's life takes a dramatic turn as an attractive young teacher (Marguerite Moreau) takes a more-than-academic interest in him. Meanwhile, artsy Jonathan must sort out his feelings for outspoken Deborah (Kelly Osborne in her first major acting role) while overcoming his insecurities about being sexually inexperienced. Troubled by what's going on at home, Dino becomes distant from his high school sweetheart Jackie, and the two reluctantly call it quits. Dino's picture-perfect life as the star of his school's hockey team and ladies man is turned upside down when he realizes that his mother is having an affair with none other than his hockey coach. Filled with confessional freeze-frame monologues reminiscent of Zach Morris's on SAVED BY THE BELL, the series explores the romantic, family, and school-related dilemmas of best buds Dino (Sean Faris), Jonathan (Chis Lowell), and Ben (Jon Foster, A DOOR IN THE FLOOR). Told from the perspective of three hormonally charged high school boys, LIFE AS WE KNOW IT (from the Gabe Sachs/Jeff Judah production team behind UNDECLARED and FREAKS AND GEEKS) presents a male spin on the traditional teen drama.
